17 Again

17 Again Poster

17 Again. Produced by Offspring Entertainment, 2009. Directed by Burr Steers.

Plot Summary:
Mike O’Donnell soon to be divorced father of teenagers, Maggie and Alex has just been passed over for a promotion again and is in a rut in life.  Just when Mike thinks life cannot get any worse, he wakes up and he is 17 years old again.  With the help of his childhood best friend Ned, Mike enrolls in high school as Mark, Ned’s son.  Attending high school with his kids, Mike gets to know a difference side of Maggie and Alex and discovers their lives are not as great as he thought.  Alex is not the popular, basketball star Mike imagined, but rather he is continuously bullied by the basketball team.  If that were not enough, Maggie is dating popular and disrespectful Stan the leader of Alex’s bullies.  Mike believes that he is on a spirit journey to help his kids and then he will be able to go back to his old life, but when he does not turn back after helping his children he is afraid he might be stuck 17 forever.

Critical Review:
17 Again is a funny and heartwarming movie about second chances.  Efron is convincing as a 30 something trapped in the body of a 17 year old’s body, hopelessly out of touch with present day teens.  Teens will find Mike’s efforts to fit in with today’s teens hilarious and will relate to the issues Maggie and Alex are facing at school.  Alex is continually bullied and Maggie is being pressured by her boyfriend to have sex.  This is a movie that teens will enjoy, but that also can be enjoyed by the whole family.
