Taylor
Swift. Speak Now.
Speak
Now is
the third studio album from 22 year old singer/songwriter Taylor Swift and is
completely written and composed by the talented young musician. The album opens with the catchy, poppy single
“Mine.” The titile track tells the story
of lost loves and last chances as Swift sings about breaking up a wedding. In track eight entitled “Mean” Swift takes
aim at bullies and critics of her singing ability, crooning, “Someday I’ll be
big enough so you can’t hit me/ and all you’ll ever be is mean.” Though one cannot help, but wonder if she is
not also responding to rapper Kanye West’s notorious interruption of her MTV
Music awards acceptance speech in 2009 in “Mean.” Swift heartfelt lyrics are evocative of
pioneering singer/songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Carole King. Teens will relate to Swift’s lyrics about the
sweetness of first love and the tragedy of heartbreak.
